Our Purpose

The Point Subset is primarily designed for high school students who are interested in mathematics. Its two-fold purpose is to provide a source of problems with recreational aspects and as a medium in which student solutions to those problems can be published. In contrast to problems in textbooks, which are classified by topics, many of these problems occur in no particular context; they are intended to be fun, but hopefully will also lead you to new mathematical insights. We will also publish articles on mathematical topics.

Inside, and in each issue, you will find a list of problems. We invite you to submit solutions to any or all of these problems. Solutions will be evaluated, the "best" will be chosen for print in later issues, together with the names, identified by school, of all those who have submitted correct solutions. In some cases more than one correct solution may be published, if they are different in approach.

Even after solutions appear, essentially different solutions are welcome. And if you know of an interesting mathematical problem that you want to share, you are invited to submit it for possible inclusion in the Problems section.

The Point Subset will be published eight times during the school year, on the 10th of September, October, November, December, February, March, April and May. We ask that any submitted materials reach us by the 1st of the month of publication. Correspondence may be submitted to The Point Subset, P.O. Box 958, Stevens Point, WI 54481.
